Festivities highlight the wine community’s wines, people, regions and experiences

September is the 19th annual California Wine Month, a time to raise a glass to the state’s wine industry and celebrate its people, regions, wines and experiences. Wine lovers can join the festivities all month long as wineries across California host events and activities ranging from hands-on harvest boot camps and tours to wine festivals, grape stomps and food and wine pairing experiences.

As the top U.S. wine-producing state and home to more than 6,200 wineries, California grows more than 100 grape varieties, produces over 81% of the country’s wine and accounts for 95% of its wine exports. In addition, California is a leader in sustainable practices, with 80% of the state’s wine produced by Certified California Sustainable wineries.

This year, California Wine Month celebrates more than the state’s distinctive wines; it also pays tribute to the vibrant wine community at its core — including winegrape growers, winemakers, vineyard workers, cellar crews and tasting room staff. Opportunities for growth are also a hallmark of the industry, with many workers finding success and advancement for themselves and their families.

California’s wine industry has played a vital role in the state’s culture and economy for more than 250 years, and the state’s landscape has expanded into a tapestry of diverse wine-producing-regions. Wine grapes thrive in 148 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) and 49 of California’s 58 counties, from the North Coast and the Sierra Foothills all the way down to Temecula and San Diego.

California Wine Month is not only an opportunity for wine enthusiasts wanting to learn more about wine’s journey from grape to glass; it is also a great time to experience the Golden State’s incredible fresh produce, which is why California Wines has collaborated with California Grown and Visit California to offer the free Iconic California Dishes e-book and wine pairing guide. The book features recipes that evoke the state’s chill, sunny vibe — all paired with California wine and creative, wine-based cocktails. Consumers can bring harvest home with seasonal recipes including Wine Country Chicken Salad with Grapes, a Peach Frose Popsicle and Cocktail, Golden State Grilled Pork Chops with Cherry Sauce and The Best Strawberry Shortcake. A full listing of all recipes can be found here.
