Spirit Airlines begins an immediate wind-down of operations, cancelling all flights and outlining refund procedures for affected passengers

Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Spirit Airlines, has announced the immediate and orderly wind-down of its operations. As a result, all Spirit Airlines flights have been cancelled, and passengers are advised not to go to the airport.
This decision follows extensive efforts by the Company to restructure its business and secure transactions aimed at strengthening its financial position and ensuring long-term sustainability. However, a significant and recent increase in oil prices, along with additional business pressures, has severely impacted the Company’s financial outlook. With no access to additional funding, Spirit was left with no alternative but to initiate the wind-down process.
Dave Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airlines, noted that the airline had reached a restructuring agreement with bondholders in March 2026 that could have supported continued operations. However, the sharp and sustained rise in fuel costs in recent weeks made it impossible to proceed, as the Company required substantial additional liquidity that was not available.
Spirit acknowledged the support of government entities, including the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Transportation, for their efforts to help preserve jobs and minimize disruption for passengers. The Company also expressed appreciation for the collaboration of labor unions, aircraft lessors, business partners, and financial stakeholders such as Citadel, Cyrus Capital, and Ares Management Corp during the restructuring process.
The airline extended its gratitude to its employees for their dedication in delivering safe, affordable travel over more than 30 years of operation.
Passengers who purchased tickets directly from Spirit using a credit or debit card will receive automatic refunds to their original form of payment. Those who booked through travel agents are advised to contact their agents directly. Refunds or compensation for bookings made with vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points will be addressed at a later stage through the bankruptcy process. Additional details are available on the Spirit restructuring website.
