Canadian visits to the U.S. keep falling

The decline in Canadian travel to the U.S. shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Statistics Canada figures revealing another month of steep year-over-year drops.

Both automobile and air travel saw notable year-over-year decreases, continuing a trend of subdued cross-border travel.

In July, Canadian-resident return trips by automobile from the U.S. totalled 1.7 million, representing a steep 36.9% drop compared with July 2024. This marks the seventh consecutive month of declines for land travel, signalling ongoing challenges for Canadians crossing the border by car. Sunday, July 27 was the busiest day for returning Canadian travellers by automobile, with 100,000 arrivals recorded. This peak was notably 13.8% higher than the average number of Sunday arrivals throughout the month, indicating some weekend travel resilience even amid overall lower numbers.

Air travel figures also revealed a mixed picture. Overall, Canadian-resident return trips by air from abroad were down 5.3% to 1.4 million compared with July 2024. Trips returning from the U.S. by air fell 25.8% year over year to 383,700, while returns from other overseas countries increased 5.9% to 1 million.

Sunday, July 27 again stood out as the peak day for air arrivals, with 55,500 Canadian residents returning by plane. The lowest daily air arrivals were recorded on Thursday, July 3, at 35,200.
