In a bid to facilitate tourism and streamline entry processes, the Dominican Republic has extended passport validity for certain nationalities, including Canadians.

Originally announced in December 2023 with an expiration date of May 31, 2024, the new measures are now valid from June 1, 2024 until November 30, 2024.

Under the new regulations, tourists from the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador can enter the Dominican Republic using their current passports, which must remain valid throughout their stay and departure from the country. This measure aims to boost tourism by eliminating the previous requirement of passports having at least six months’ validity upon entry.

The announcement by Dominican authorities underscores their commitment to enhancing visitor experiences and supporting the tourism industry, which is a significant driver of the country’s economy.

“For travellers from the specified countries, this means they can plan their trips with more flexibility, knowing they won’t need to renew their passports prematurely,” stated a spokesperson from the General Directorate of Migration.

In addition to the passport adjustment, all foreign tourists entering the Dominican Republic are required to fulfill several criteria, including holding a roundtrip ticket, providing proof of a permanent address within the country, and demonstrating sufficient financial means to cover expenses during their stay.

Airline operators have been instructed to adhere strictly to these requirements to avoid complications for passengers and potential penalties for non-compliance. The General Directorate of Migration has communicated these guidelines to all authorized airlines operating in Dominican territory.

Moreover, all travellers, both foreign and Dominican, flying into or out of the Dominican Republic via commercial flights must complete a free electronic entry and exit form. This form, available for completion online as soon as travel plans are confirmed, replaces the previous requirement to submit it 72 hours before departure. The form is available at eticket.migracion.gob.do.

If staying beyond 30 days, travellers can expect an additional fee upon departure (determined on a sliding scale), according to the total length of their stay. “While these measures aim to simplify the entry process, it is crucial for travelers to stay informed and comply with all current requirements to ensure smooth travel,” advised migration officials.
