Riviera Nayarit
The Riviera Nayarit continues to gain prominence as a luxury destination with the arrival of new international hotel brands

February 8 - 2021 will bring with it new hotel openings in the Riviera Nayarit, which is already preparing for a second “wave” after the completion of important projects during 2020—Conrad Punta de Mita, in September, and One & Only Mandarina in November—, which will be a year of great beginnings for the tourism industry.

The new properties will be located in Punta de Mita, an area with endless beaches and soft white sand, and already home to some of the most elegant and exclusive resorts in this Destination.

Marc Murphy, managing director of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (OVC), said that even though the hotel industry has been one of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, it was also an important year for the Riviera Nayarit with the arrival of new hotel brands.

Below is a small sample of the grand openings that await the Riviera Nayarit in 2021:

AMResorts

AMResorts, part of the Apple Leisure Group hotel chain, recently announced the opening of the 278-room Secrets® Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort and the 363-room Dreams® Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort. Both properties—which are scheduled to open June 1—are located in an exclusive area of Punta de Mita with breathtaking views of the famous Marietas Islands. The two hotels will offer an unlimited all-inclusive format at the Grand Tourism level with all the chain’s luxury features.

Auberge Resorts Collection

In November 2021, Auberge Resorts Collection will open the ultra-luxurious Susurros del Corazón property, consisting of 59 residential villas AKA “beachside bungalows” designed with a strong boho-chic influence. This romantic retreat nestled on jungle cliffs boasts panoramic views of the Marietas Islands and stunning natural surroundings. Amenities include three enormous pools that tumble down to the beach and a spa tucked away among lush gardens inspired by the healing properties of the region’s plants.

Marriott International

This year will also see the launch of the expansion of the Grand Matlali Hills Resort & Spa, which will move to the all-inclusive concept under the Delta brand, the first for this U.S. chain worldwide. In addition, the company has plans for four more Marriott umbrella projects for 2023 and 2025: Westin, Autograph Collection, and Ritz Carlton, which together will total 1,440 rooms for the region.

Iberostar

Although the construction of the second property of Spanish chain Iberostar in the Riviera Nayarit (the first is Iberostar Playa Mita) was delayed by the falling European market due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the projection is that the 300-room hotel will be ready in December of this year, with an investment of close to 80 million dollars.

A little more…

Although the opening date has not yet been set, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Riviera Nayarit, located in Costa Canuva, Fonatur’s Integrally Planned Center (IPC), is expected to open in Compostela. The hotel represents an investment of US$150 million with 110 luxury rooms, suites, and private villas with ocean views. A Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is also being built in the same development, but no opening date has yet been set.

Finally, at the Mandarina complex—where the One & Only Mandarina recently opened—construction will begin on the Rosewood Resort & Spa hotel, which is scheduled to open in 2022.

The Riviera Nayarit is a safe destination. Hotels, restaurants, and tourist establishments are following all the health protocols established by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Health and operating at the allowed capacities. Access to the beaches is limited. Be a responsible tourist: wear your mask and keep your distance.
