April 15 - Air Canada is sticking with its plan to offer just three sun destinations in May 2021, and those flights will be geared to essential workers and cargo.

 

Last month the airline had indicated that the only sun flights on its schedule for May 2021 were Bridgetown (Barbados), Kingston (Jamaica) and Mexico City.

 

Nothing has changed in that regard, Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick told Travelweek yesterday.

 

Says Fitzpatrick: “Air Canada will extend its suspension of Sun flying throughout May. We will continue to operate some flights to Mexico City, Barbados, and Kingston, but these would not carry passengers south. Instead, they will provide essential services, for example carrying cargo and in some cases on northbound flights, temporary foreign workers and Canadians currently abroad. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our network as appropriate, as well as work with the government to develop a safe reopening plan and restore travel.”

 

On January 29 the federal government announced that all four of Canada’s major carriers – Air Canada, WestJet, Transat and Sunwing – had agreed to its request to suspend sun destination flights from January 31 – April 30.

 

Transat has since indicated that it intends to restart operations in mid-June. Sunwing is targeting June 23. And WestJet announced earlier this week that it is aiming for June 4.
