The Trump administration is reportedly exploring a potential economic agreement with Cuba that could include easing travel restrictions for Americans visiting the island, according to reports.

As reported by USA Today, sources familiar with the administration’s plans said a deal could be announced soon, although details and timing remain unclear.

According to the report, discussions around a possible agreement have included measures that could allow greater travel to Havana and potential arrangements involving ports, energy and tourism. U.S. officials have also considered dropping some sanctions as part of a broader economic approach to relations with the island nation.

Talks have reportedly also examined potential political outcomes for Cuba’s leadership, including a possible transition framework involving President Miguel Díaz-Canel, while members of the Castro family could remain on the island.

The discussions come after a period of heightened U.S. pressure on the Cuban government following Washington’s recent actions against Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Rather than pursuing direct efforts to topple Havana’s communist government, the administration is said to be considering an approach centred on economic engagement that prioritizes U.S. strategic interests.

Travel policy toward Cuba has shifted significantly in recent years. During his presidency, Barack Obama eased some restrictions on travel and engagement with the island, though many of those measures were later rolled back during Trump’s first term.

Trump has publicly indicated that discussions with Cuban officials are underway through U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

It remains unclear what concessions the United States could seek in return if an agreement moves forward.
