News / Why Spain is turning its attention to growing Canadian tourism
Here's why Spain should be on your travel radar in 2026

With the introduction of new all-year-round routes, immersive destination itineraries, and industry events, the Tourist Office of Spain is focused on providing more authentic experiences for Canadian travellers in 2026.
The Spanish delegation invited industry representatives and influencers to join them in celebrating another successful year of operations and to share the new initiatives planned for 2026.

Due to the unclear situation surrounding travel to the USA, Spain is seizing the chance to attract more Canadian visitors to its coastline.
“As Canadian travellers continue to change their preferences and embrace new destinations, there’s no question that Spain’s mix of climate, history, cultural diversity, and gastronomy is creating greater connectivity between our two countries,” said Isabel Martín Benítez, Director of The Tourist Office of Spain.
Spain has become even more accessible for Canadians, with 3 new direct flights added to the existing connections, making it an especially exciting time to visit. The new flights include:
- Montreal to Palma de Mallorca, from Air Canada
- Halifax to Madrid, from WestJet
- Toronto to Madrid, via Iberia
This year, the Tourist Office of Spain focused heavily on the Canadian market, facilitating destination experiences for numerous journalists and digital content creators, engaging with the industry at North American trade exhibitions, and organizing ACTA's International Conference in Castilla y León, where a hundred travel agents gathered to experience the region.
Growing Numbers
During the event, the Spanish delegates revealed impressive statistics highlighting the rise in tourism to the country. Visitors are now staying longer, with the average duration going up from 6 days in 2024 to 8 days in 2025. Additionally, spending has grown from 972 million in 2024 to 1,098 million in 2025. Spain also experienced the highest growth in visitor arrivals during the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, outperforming other European destinations.
New Campaign
To further promote the destination, the Tourist Office of Spain has introduced an exciting new campaign titled “Think you know Spain? Think again.” This initiative aims to showcase the country as much more than the typical image people have, highlighting its diverse attractions and experiences beyond the traditional Spain.

2026
Spain is forecasting another successful year as Europe remains the most popular international destination for Canadian travellers, followed by Asia and the South Pacific.
The destination is already seeing a 2% increase in the reservations for 2025/26 compared to 2024/2025.
Canadian visitors have shown interest in the multi-city Spanish itineraries. They want to explore diverse regions thanks to the nation's reputation for safety, rich cultural offerings, and exceptional cuisine. Canadian 2026 bucket list destinations include Catalonia, Andalucia, Comunidad Valenciana, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, and Galicia.
Spain has a lot in store for Canadians in 2026, starting with exciting events like World Tapas Day (June), collaborations with Solo Women Travellers, a Summit with North American Travel Agents, the Cinema Festival in Vancouver, and much more!
Within the country, Spain is gearing up for some big experiences and attractions, like Gaudí Year (a year-long celebration to commemorate the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death on June 10, 1926), the first total solar eclipse, which will occur in Spain on August 12, 2026, and Camino de Santiago (a system of historic pilgrimage paths throughout Europe that converge at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain).
With its growing accessibility, authentic cultural experiences, and exciting new initiatives, Spain is well-positioned to welcome even more Canadian travellers in 2026.
