Airlines including Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Sunwing have updates after the unexpected closure of Costa Rica’s second-busiest airport.

Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in the Costa Rican province of Guanacaste will reportedly remain closed until at least November 21 due to runway damage sustained during Tropical Storm Sara.

Air Canada is offering flexible changes for LIR for travel November 20 and November 21. More information can be found here.

WestJet’s change policy is in effect for LIR passengers travelling November 19, November 20 and November 21. Details are here

Air Transat’s November 18 post reads: “Due to heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Sara, which have led to the temporary closure of Liberia-Guanacaste Airport, some of our flights (TS601 and TS301) departing from Liberia are affected."

Air Transat said it is actively working to ensure the safe return of all its passengers to Canada within the next 48 hours. Passengers checked-in on flights TS301 and TS601, originally scheduled to depart on November 17 from LIR back to Toronto and Montreal, will now depart Costa Rica via San José Airport (SJO) instead, today, November 19. Sunwing has updates for LIR passengers as well. Sunwing has rescheduled its northbound flights from LIR to now depart from SJO.

Sunwing’s flight originally scheduled to depart LIR on Nov. 15 (flight WG725 LIR-YYZ) is now scheduled to depart today, November 19 at 7 p.m. local from SJO. The Nov. 18 flight (WG7125 LIR-YYZ) is now also scheduled to depart today, November 19, at 10 p.m. local from SJO.

The November 18 flight (WG729 LIR-YUL) will now depart November 20 at 6 p.m. local from SJO.
