News / Hurricane Irma Cuba Updates
Status update for Cuba's seven most popular destinations
Hurricane Irma’s trajectory saw the storm make landfall in Cuba in early September. Cuba’s storm readiness was tested and proved resilient, notes the Cuba Tourism Board. Hours after the storm had passed, the Cuban government launched into action with a comprehensive response effort aimed to rebuild, reinforce and reinvigorate the island nation.
More than two months post-Irma, here’s an update of how seven of the most popular tourist destinations in the country are doing.
Varadero
It's hard to tell that Varadero was damaged at all by Irma. Its cabarets, restaurants and golf course continue to serve patrons/ Over 1 million visitors come to this destination every year and that number is expected to rise.
Cayo Coco
The causeway has been restored and the destination is again alive with scuba divers, kite-surfers and volleyball players. Travellers are encouraged to visit the area's undistributed wilderness and first-rate comfort.
Santiago de Cuba
Santiago de Cuba remained unbowed by the winds of Irma. The nearby Turquino National Park is still a great location for a hiking . expedition, and the city itself features striking Spanish architecture.
Havana
The city's seawall bore the brunt of Irma's wrath, leaving much of the Cuban capital and its tourism facilities untouched. The city's colourful colonial buildings remain as interesting as ever and the sounds of salsa dancing still fill the night air. Havana is ready, and more than able, to welcome all visitors.
Holguin
The eastern city of Holguin emerged from Irma with only minor property damage. Now fully repaired, its many monuments tot he heroes of Cuban history continue to offer a glimpse into the culture of the nation.
Cayo Santa Maria
Cayo Santa Maria also had its causeway repaired after Hurricane Irma. When the furious tide receded, authorities also found a nice surprise: the beaches had more white sand and dunes than ever. With airports now open, travellers can visit Cayo Santa Maria at their leisure.
Camaguey
Inhabitants of Camaguey are known for their resilience, so it's no surprise that Irma failed to conquer Cuba's third largest city. Camaguey's many plazas provide a breather from a day of exploring the city. For more information visit gocuba.ca
