French Polynesia is known for its rugged scenery and turquoise water, but did you know that from late July to November, it also becomes a sanctuary for migrating humpback whales? This seasonal migration creates an extremely unique environment for prospective Canadian travellers interested in trips that explore marine life and dive into aquatic adventures sustainably.

To protect this annual phenomenon and ensure it remains accessible to future generations, Tahiti Tourisme has partnered with the Oceania Association to launch Preserving Our Whales (‘A PĀRURU TŌ MAU PARĀOA), a video campaign in support of safe, sustainable whale watching in The Islands of Tahiti.

Where Should Canadians Go Whale Watching in French Polynesia?

The best way to watch humpback whales in French Polynesia is on a guided tour with a certified operator. Excursions are extremely popular during the season, so it’s best to book in advance.

Find a list of certified whale watching operators here.

What Guidelines Should Canadian Whale Watchers Follow?

  • Whale watching is strictly prohibited in lagoons, bays, and passes
  • Never block a cetacean between the reef and the shore
  • No swimmers are allowed within a 15-meter radius of the animal
  • Read the full list of whale watching rules and best practices here.

Filming and Photography Protocol

Anyone wishing to photograph or film protected marine species for commercial or marketing purposes must submit a filming request to the Department of the Environment of French Polynesia.
