The travel industry is breathing a sigh of relief as flights resume to and from Puerto Vallarta.

The turnaround comes after a tense two days of cartel violence in the state of Jalisco, impacting PVR as well as Guadalajara, and putting Canadian travellers heading to Mexico on edge. Airlines started cancelling flights in and out of PVR this past Sunday.

In an X post Air Canada said: “Following consultation with the Government of Canada and Mexican authorities, we will resume full operations from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta on Tuesday, February 24. Operations from Toronto to Guadalajara will resume on Feb. 25.” The airline has added seats to its schedule to get passengers home sooner.

Air Canada’s flexible rebooking policy is in effect until Feb. 28 for those with imminent travel plans to affected areas; click here for details. Air Canada says it will advise any customers in Mexico who were on flights from Sunday (Feb. 22) and Monday (Feb. 24) of their new itinerary as soon as a rebooking option is confirmed, and notes that passengers should only head to PVR airport if they have confirmation of their new flights, which show as operating.

WestJet says it continues to closely monitor developments in Mexico. “Following a thorough review of the current conditions, WestJet will resume scheduled operations to and from Puerto Vallarta (PVR), Guadalajara (GDL) and Manzanillo (ZLO) beginning Tuesday, February 24.

WestJet’s flexible change policy remains in effect for passengers travelling to PVR, GDL and ZLO until Feb. 27; click here. The airline says it “will review all expense submissions incurred as a result of this disruption.

Air Transat, also resuming flights to and from Puerto Vallarta today, is also maintaining its special flexibility measure for flights to Puerto Vallarta on Feb. 24 and 25; more info is here. “Elsewhere in Mexico, operations are running normally,” adds Air Transat.

Porter Airlines says its flights resuming today may operate with modified schedules, and passengers should verify flight times before travelling to the airport. Complimentary changes are available for PVR flights through Feb. 25; more details can be found here.

Global Affairs Canada continues to advise Canadian travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling in Mexico, with regional orange-level advisories (avoid non-essential travel) to several states, including Jalisco.
