It’s that time of year again when Hola Sun is hosting a special Cuba FAM trip for travel agents and media. This year, the sun was shining in Varadero and Havana as over 25 Canadian travellers explored the unique historical landmarks in Cuba’s capital, inspected new hotels in the bustling Varadero, and visited the stunning natural beauty of Viñales.

First things first, if you haven’t visited Cuba since December 2021, you’ll be amazed by the number of new private businesses that have opened to cater to tourists, offering a wide variety of local restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and retail stores. Cuba’s Greenest Destination Viñales

Viñales is a town situated in the north-central region of Pinar del Rio province, renowned for its breathtaking mountain views and vibrant greenery. It is the first area to have emerged from the ocean, and in December 1999, UNESCO designated the landscape as a National Park. This region is safeguarded by the Environmental Ministry of Cuba.

Matanzas

Those who have previously visited Varadero are likely familiar with Matanzas, the capital of Matanzas province. Situated approximately 30 minutes from the Varadero peninsula, Matanzas offers a variety of activities and tours. Founded in 1693, the city boasts a rich history. Visitors can explore attractions such as the 18th-century Sauto Theatre, the original pharmacy established in 1882, Arms Square, the Provincial History Museum, and the Cathedral of San Carlos de Borromeo, among others. Matanzas is often referred to as the City of Bridges, thanks to the 17 bridges that span three rivers: the Yumuri, San Juan, and Canimar, earning it the nickname the Venice of Cuba.

Havana

Global Agents has visited Havana three times, and it’s still not enough to experience everything this city has to offer. So we have come up with a sort of Havana 101 guide to help you start your Havana explorations! Here’s what you absolutely have to visit when you come to Havana:

1. Historical Sites of Old Havana

Havana is Cuba’s capital and is the largest city on the island. Founded in the 16th century, this gem is filled with historical sites. The most prominent include:

2. Restaurants and Bars

The most renowned dining establishments and bars in Havana include El Floridita Bar, which was Ernest Hemingway's favourite spot where he savoured the famous Daiquiri, and La Bodeguita Del Medio, rumoured to be the birthplace of the Mojito cocktail.

In Old Havana, you can enjoy lunch at La Calesa Real, a charming private restaurant offering a variety of Cuban and international dishes. With its warm, friendly atmosphere and live music, it’s a perfect spot for a delightful meal. The service is excellent, and the prices are affordable. 

On the outskirts of Havana lies the fishing village of Cojímar, which inspired Ernest Hemingway to write his famous novel The Old Man and the Sea. Be sure to visit the remarkable seafood restaurant El Portal de Cojímar, which draws inspiration from the novel. Enjoy its excellent seafood and traditional Cuban dishes.

3. Ride Along the Malecon in Cuban Vintage Cars

When you think of Cuba, the vibrant vintage cars that adorn nearly every image of Havana likely come to mind. This makes it essential to experience a drive along the Malecon, an 8 km coastal roadway linking Old Havana and Central Havana. For an even better experience, get a Cuban driver to make this trip even more memorable.
