A new survey offers a look at holiday travel projections for these last weeks of 2024.
The Ipsos survey on behalf of Simplii Financial shows that almost eight in 10 Canadians (79%) feel travel has become less affordable over the past five years.
Just over two-thirds of Canadians (68%) say they are making compromises when it comes to holiday travel, and more than half (56%) say they’d like to travel this holiday season but it’s unaffordable.
Of those who are planning to travel, the majority are taking shorter trips and staying within Canada. About half (52%) say they are opting to stay within their home province.
Just over one-third (37%) of those respondents who will be travelling say they’re heading for international destinations, with the U.S. (42%), and Mexico and the Caribbean (26%) taking the top two spots.
Asked how they plan to reduce travel costs this year, Canadians say they will be choosing cheaper accommodations (23%), and reducing airfare costs by flying off-peak (18%) or using discount airlines (16%).
The poll was conducted November 8 – 15, surveying 1,500 Canadians 18+ online.
