Aeromexico says they will ground 19 MAX-9 aircraft after the Alaska Airlines door blow out incident. The airline says the Boeing 737 MAX-9 planes will be grounded for a fleet inspection.

Over the weekend, Aeromexico announced that it will ground its 737 MAX-9 aircraft, the most current model, from manufacturer Boeing following the incident with Alaska Airlines.

On Friday evening, a piece of the aircraft identified as a door plug broke off of the plane shortly after take off from Portland, Oregon.

Mexican airline Aeromexico said that in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), their 737 MAX-9 will remain grounded.

“The inspection of our MAX-9 fleet will conclude as soon as possible to continue with scheduled operations and we will continue working in coordination with Boeing as well as with the competent authorities,” the airline reported Saturday.

Aeromexico has at least 19 aircraft of this type, according to data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).

The National Transportation Safety Board says they have since located the plug from the Alaska Airline plane. According to the Board, the plug was covering an unused exit door. It blew out minutes into an Alaska Airlines flight Friday evening.

The Board said the discovery could prove vital in the investigation of the cause of the blowout. National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said the plug was found near Portland in the backyard of a private home.

In a statement Sunday, the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all types of Boeing 737 Max 9s involved until it’s “satisfied that they are safe.”
