Airport handles more than 5,000 flights since opening

Eight months into operations at the Tulum International Airport, state authorities report nearly 700,000 passengers. Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama says the new airport continues to pass expectations with the recorded arrival of 670,000 national and international travelers.

The reported figures are within the Jungle Airport’s first eight months of operations which also include more than 5,000 flights.

The increase has been noted during March and July of this year, which are the state’s busiest travel times. According to Lezama, in March there were more than 5,000 international passengers, by April that number reached 53,000 passengers and by July, travel figures skyrocketed, reaching more than 88,000.

In June, Tulum International Airport Administrator General Javier Diego Campillo said the initial hope was that around 700,000 passengers would land at the airport in the first year. However, due to the continual increase in flights, the airport could reach as many as 1.3 to 1.4 million passengers before the year is out.
