Hotel occupancy rates around Cancun have been slightly above expectations

April 8 - Hotel occupancy rates around Cancun have been slightly above expectations with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of national and international visitors. The Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ) says that while they continue to wait for exact figures, preliminary data shows rates between 65.1 and 65.3 percent.

Lizzy Cole Guerrero, CPTQ Promotion Director indicated that in addition to national and American tourists, European tourism increased after the recent reestablishment of flights from Madrid and Lisbon, as well as flights from Paris, Poland, Frankfurt and London.

Despite restrictions in Europe, these flights continue to operate well,” she said adding that they have also seen an increase of visitors from South American countries through connections by Copa Airlines.

Currently, the Mexican Caribbean is one of the destinations with the best air connections in the world,” she said.

Governor Carlos Joaquín González has also acknowledged the above-expected hotel occupancy rates being recorded. In a Monday interview with Radio Turquesa, he said it is not a secret that the development and economic recovery of Quintana Roo depends on tourism, hence the need to strengthen all sanitary measures, especially in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, “which is where you have the most visitors.

At Easter, we had a rise in the arrival of flights for which some hotels requested special authorization to operate above the 60 percent capacity. It is expected that the second holiday week will continue like this, with more visitors, so it is necessary that we take care of ourselves,” he added.

Carlos Joaquín expressed confidence that there will not be a rebound in infections, although he pointed out that it will be necessary to wait a couple of weeks to know if everyone did their part.

He made it clear that these holidays are a test to determine if the state is ready to move forward to a green epidemiological light or if it will experience another setback.

The virus is still here, so it is necessary to not relax, to maintain good habits, to use the mask properly, keep a healthy distance and wash your hands frequently,” he added. The Cancun, Riviera Maya region anticipated around 635,000 visitors for the two-week Easter holiday season.
