More than three million tourists visited the region during the summer holiday season

More than three million tourists visited the region during the summer holiday season, averaging a 60 percent hotel occupancy rate, and according to the State Secretary of Tourism (Sectur), more than 120,000 tourists remain in Quintana Roo even though the summer holidays have officially ended.

The agency says that across the board, the state averaged a 60 percent occupancy rate, which is the rate allowed under the ongoing orange epidemiological light. Other places such as Puerto Morelos came in with an average rate of 59 percent, while Isla Mujeres averaged 63.4.

They also say that to date, 195 hotels have reopened with only 12 totaling 1,301 rooms, failing to reactivate during the holiday period. Sectur points out the most important markets for the state this year have been national and American tourists.

International visitors counted this summer included tourists from Bogotá, Caracas, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Guatemala, Lima and Lisbon, among numerous others.

Over the weekend, the Cancun International Airport maintained nearly 500 air operations per day. On Saturday, airport managing company ASUR reported 499 operations of which 248 were arrivals with 88 being national and 160 international, as well as 251 departures, of which 91 were national and 160 international.

On Sunday, the airport closed the week with another busy day, reporting 439 flights. Of those, 89 were national arrivals and 131, international. Of the 219 Sunday departures, 89 were to varying terminals around Mexico and 131 to international airports.

Airlines flying in and out of Cancun International include Air Canada, Air Portugal, Air Transat, Alaska, American, Avianca, British, Cóndor, Conviasa, Copa, Delta, Frontier, Iberojet, Jet Blue, Laser, Latam, Spirit , Sun Country, Southwest, Sunwing, TAG, Turkish, United, Viva Air, Wamos, Wingo and West Jet, among others.

Several US airlines have reported exceeding pre-pandemic flights to Mexico this year. Last week, the Port Administration of Quintana Roo said that they had days where as many as 11,000 people used the ferry terminals during the summer season.
