“We believe that from this week, a greater number of Canadian visitors will begin to arrive from now until March"

During the first three months of the New Year, the Mexican Caribbean is expecting the largest number of Canadians, the region’s second most important international tourism sector.

Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, said that based off previous statistics, the greatest number of Canadian travelers occurs during the first three months.

We believe that from this week, a greater number of Canadian visitors will begin to arrive from now until March, although this depends a lot on their winter. When there is a lot of snowfall, they are encouraged to travel and that benefits us, so we are confident,” he said.

He noted that there are flights from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, to name a few, and hopes that airlines will be able to announce more soon. As of the beginning of the year, 10 Canadian flights were reported. Eight to Cancun and two to Cozumel.

Last year, there was a market drop due to the announcement of the suspension of flights to Mexico from Canada. The suspension was implemented as a measure to avoid an increase in Covid-19 cases, however, the measure was extended longer than expected.

In 2019, the Canadian market represented 1.1 million travelers to Quintana Roo. In 2020, and due to the pandemic, it fell 59 percent with only 475,000 Canucks arriving.

We are confident that it will be a good year for this market and in view of this, we are working to provide the expected health security.

Even with the new wave of the Omicron variant, tourism continues to arrive in the Mexican Caribbean.
