Once a leading producer of sugar in the West Indies, St. Kitts knows a thing or two about rum. Home of the oldest surviving rum distillery in the Caribbean (dating back to 1681), the island is fast becoming known for its emerging rum scene, targeting travellers who crave the latest immersive food and drink experiences. The Kittitian RumMaster program, which certifies visitors as St. Kitts rum experts following a full-day course that includes learning about the local history, how to bottle and blend rum, create craft cocktails and more, was launched earlier this year and has proven extremely popular with foodies and rum aficionados.

The island recently rolled out the rum for Canada’s top travel and culinary media, sampling several St. Kitts varieties, like Hibiscus Spirits and Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum, that are ideal for craft cocktails, to a small-batch amber rum from Old Road Rum, designed for sipping and savouring.

Ellison ‘Tommy’ Thompson, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority noted, “In St. Kitts, you can enjoy a different rum punch every place you visit. Everyone on the island puts their own special twist on this favourite. You can enjoy a rum punch on our Scenic Railway, in the rainforest at a farm-to table dinner, at a historic sugar estate, or on the grounds of the oldest surviving distillery in the Caribbean, to name just a few,” he noted.

For more information on the Kittitian RumMaster program or the culinary and rum themed experiences you or your clients can have in St. Kitts, visit the destination’s new website: visitstkitts.com and read their new cocktail and culinary guides here.
