Since suspending operations to Cuba, the company says bookings to the Dominican Republic have increased by 50% compared to last year

Sunwing Vacations is reporting a significant shift in booking patterns following the temporary suspension of its Cuba program earlier this year, with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and several other sun destinations seeing strong year-over-year growth.

As Canada’s largest vacation provider to Cuba, Sunwing accounted for well over half of the country’s overall capacity to the destination this past winter. Since suspending operations to Cuba, the company says bookings to the Dominican Republic have increased by 50% compared to last year.

Canadian guests remain highly intentional about how they spend on travel, with value continuing to play a major role in destination choice,” said Deana Murphy, Vice President, Sales & Business Development, Sunwing Vacations. “As travel demand evolves, we’re seeing guests gravitate toward destinations that offer a strong balance of affordability, quality resort experiences and the warm hospitality guests value most.

Within the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata and Samaná have recorded the strongest growth. Sunwing says bookings to Puerto Plata are up 60% year over year, while Samaná is also experiencing significant gains following expanded air service, resort options and experiences.

Properties such as Eurostars Grand Cayacoa are emerging as strong alternatives for guests who previously vacationed in Cuba, offering a compelling mix of affordability and unique local charm,” continued Murphy.

Mexico has also attracted a growing share of displaced Cuba demand and now accounts for a significant portion of Sunwing’s overall bookings. According to the company, approximately one-quarter of travellers affected by the Cuba suspension have opted for Mexico, with Cancun leading bookings. Cozumel and Mazatlán are also seeing increased demand from travellers seeking value and a broad selection of resorts.

Sunwing says destinations that share some of the characteristics that have traditionally attracted Cuba travellers are also benefiting from increased demand. Mazatlán, for example, has experienced year-over-year booking growth of more than 70%, while Puerto Plata continues to appeal to travellers looking for affordable beach vacations.

The company is also seeing increased interest in destinations offering local culture and immersive experiences. Bookings to Liberia, Costa Rica have doubled year over year, while Rio Hato, Panama has recorded a 35% increase.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas continues to attract travellers seeking beach-focused vacations, with bookings to Freeport increasing by more than 20% compared to last year.

Despite strong growth in alternative sun destinations, Sunwing says it remains optimistic about Cuba’s long-term future and its importance to the company’s business.

Cuba has been an important part of Sunwing’s story for many years, and we remain hopeful for the destination’s future and the communities that have long welcomed Canadian guests,” said Murphy.
