WestJet launches five new sun routes for winter 2026-2027

WestJet is expanding its winter 2026-27 network with five new non-stop sun routes, including its first-ever service between Calgary and Mérida, Mexico.

The additions will connect travellers to destinations across Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, while supporting growing demand for winter escapes to Mexico and the Latin Caribbean.

What Are The New Routes?

Leading the expansion is a new weekly non-stop flight between Calgary and Mérida, beginning Dec. 17, 2026. According to WestJet, it will be the only direct connection between Western Canada and the capital of Mexico’s Yucatán state, known for its colonial architecture, culinary scene and proximity to archaeological sites.

The airline is also adding four additional weekly routes:

Winnipeg–Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, beginning Nov. 28, 2026
Winnipeg–Belize City, Belize, beginning Dec. 14, 2026
Regina–San José del Cabo, Mexico, beginning Dec. 14, 2026
Ottawa–Liberia, Costa Rica, beginning Dec. 20, 2026

WestJet said the new services reinforce its commitment to providing Canadians with more non-stop access to popular sun destinations while managing fleet growth during the busy winter travel season.

During peak winter operations, the airline will serve 50 sun destinations from 15 Canadian cities, more than any other airline in Canada.

WestJet will also maintain its position as Canada’s largest carrier to Mexico by number of flights, while remaining the leading Canadian airline serving Belize and Liberia.

The airline added that additional capacity increases on several returning winter routes will be announced in the coming weeks.

Sunwing Vacations Expands Winter Lineup

Complementing the airline’s expanded network, Sunwing Vacations has also unveiled its winter 2026-27 vacation package schedule, adding new and returning options for Canadian travellers.

The tour operator will once again offer packages to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Roatán, Honduras, while introducing vacation packages between Ottawa and Liberia, Costa Rica for the first time.
